Ipe is a great choice when you’re building a premium deck. This beautiful tropical hardwood is several times stronger than California redwood and composite decking. It’s one of the longest lasting decking materials around. This exotic decking is used for both commercial properties and homes.
Characteristics: These boards are pre-grooved and ready to be installed with DeckWise® Hidden Deck Fasteners for a smooth, fastener-free surface. Ipe is very dense and hard with a closed grain. Color ranges from reddish brown to olive to nearly black. Ipe contains oils that bugs and bacteria don’t like, adding to its durability. Without oiling, boards will gradually weather to silvery gray. Regular oiling will help retain ipe’s natural color.
Working with ipe decking: Because of its density, ipe can blunt cutting edges. Carbide saw blades and drill tips are recommended. Pre-drilling is also recommended. Recommended fasteners: DeckWise Hidden Deck Fasteners.
Ipe deck board specs: Actual measurements of 5/4 in. x 6 in. nominal boards are 1 in. x 5.5 in. Actual width of individual boards can vary slightly depending on moisture content and climate. Moisture content can fluctuate depending on where the boards are stored. Note: Ends are not precision trimmed. Some boards may be up to 2 inches longer than described.
WARNING: Drilling, sawing, sanding, or machining wood products can expose you to wood dust, a substance known to the State of California to cause cancer. Avoid inhaling wood dust or use a dust mask or other safeguards for personal protection. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov/wood.
