The only difference between grooved and ungrooved boards are the way they are installed. The boards are identical except that grooved boards have indentations on the sides for clips to be inserted whereas ungrooved boards are like a solid pieces of lumber that need to be adhered down with nails or screws. Ungrooved boards are generally used on stairs or the outer perimeter of the deck so as you don’t see any grooves when the project is complete.
