So you’re ready to update the look of a room with new floors. Or maybe you’re thinking bigger, and want to change your entire home! Or office. Or business?

We’re here to tell you – those all sound like great ideas! But at BuildDirect, we know comparing and contrasting different floors can be a pain. So, if you’re not sure where to start, here’s a bunch of benefits and reasons why laminate flooring might be the perfect solution for you.

1) Durability

Laminate is a strong, scratch-resistant, and highly durable flooring surface. Protected by a tough external layer and resin coating. It’s great for high traffic areas and houses where there are pets and children. For general residential and light commercial use, be sure to choose a laminate with an AC rating of 3 or higher.

2) Easy to install

Laminate is much easier to install than other floor types. That’s because the boards are designed to interlock, making them easy to work with. Plus, Laminate can be “floated” over most existing floors, saving installation time over other types of flooring which may need to be glued, stapled or nailed down. It’s so easy to install, most people can do it themselves. It’s a great project for any level of DIY’er.

3) Price

Laminate flooring is less expensive than traditional hardwood, but doesn’t fall short when it comes to look and quality. There’s a great laminate flooring choice for every price range.

4) Subfloors

Laminate’s versatile, and can be installed on nearly any type of subfloor, like concrete or even pre-existing vinyl floors. In many cases when the installation of a hardwood floor is not compatible with a subfloor, laminate flooring is a smart option.

5) Styles

Laminate flooring is sold in a wide variety of wood, stone, and tile finishes. All of these are available in different colors, surface treatments, thicknesses, and plank styles.

6) Easy to clean and maintain

Laminate flooring’s moisture and stain resistant surface makes cleaning spills easy. There are no special cleaners needed to keep a laminate floor in top shape. Daily sweeping is all you need!

7) Hypoallergenic

Since there are no places to trap dust and other particles that can cause allergies for some people, laminate flooring is a great choice. The underlayment provides a moisture barrier that not only protects the floor from damage, but also prevents mold from forming and sporing.

Other things to consider:

Laminate is versatile, but it’s not without limits. If you were thinking about laminate for a laundry room and bathroom, the risk of a more serious water leak makes it a bad choice. Kitchens are do-able, but also less recommended.

Laminates are built to be moisture resistant but not waterproof. The well-sealed wear layer of laminates easily tolerate mopping and cleaning, but once moisture finds its way along the edges, underneath the surface layer, or into the locking system, warping and swelling can ruin your floor. Just make sure you put your shiny new laminate in a place where it won’t be dealing with copious amounts of water.

Also, laminates are made to resemble real wood. But, they’re not real wood. So they’ll sound and feel slightly differently underfoot. If you want the acoustics of real hardwood under your bare feet, you’d have to opt for a thicker, more expensive board such as a 12mm or 15mm laminate.
